The OWC drive also supports eSata, but I don't have an eSata interface. Given that Lightscribe only works with USB 2.0, I decided to use USB 2.0. I also tested the OWC drive connected via Firewire 800, but it's performance was only 3% faster than when it was connected via USB 2.0. So, the OWC drive only took 45% of the time that the Apple SuperDrive took. Using the OWC connected via USB 2.0, the rip took 8 minutes, 15 seconds. Using the stock Apple SuperDrive, the rip took 18 minutes, 15 seconds. I ran some tests by ripping a DVD movie that had a size of 3.8GB. However, the actual real-world performance of the OWC drive is significantly better. The OWC drive also says it reads DVDs at 16x. The stock Apple SuperDrive that came with my Mac Pro (Early 2008) calims that it can read DVDs at up to 16x. I got the OWC Mercury Pro (URL) above, and I'm very happy with it. If I get an external DVD drive that also connects via Firewire 800, will the fact that my Drobo and the DVD drive both use Firewire 800 slow things down, or it doesn't matter?Īnyone with recommendations on faster DVD drives? Next question - I'm ripping the DVDs to a Drobo connected via Firewire 800. Looking at specs, the specs of the stock Superdrive seems competitive with other drives, but does anyone have any recommendations/experience with other drives that are substantially faster than the stock drive (and preferably external DVD drives)? If I can get a drive that's substantially faster than the stock DVD drive, that would be great (by "substantially faster", I mean 50% or more faster). Are there faster DVD drives that can rip substantially faster than the stock Superdrive? I'd be interested in getting an external drive since my Mac Pro is underneath my desk and having to reach down to insert/retrieve DVDs is a pain. At this rate, it will take a very very long time to rip all my DVDs.

It's taking about an hour to rip each DVD movie. I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) with the stock Super Drive. I have about 1500 DVDs that I'm in the process of ripping into VIDEO_TS folders to my Drobo attached via Firewire 800.
